Interview with Eden Advocate Juliana Neufeld

Monster Children, a totally badass online mag, sit down and chat with the one and only, Juliana Neufeld. Juliana is our talented, drop dead gorgeous Eden Advocate. Who doesn’t want to sit down with this beauty?!

If you weren’t an artist, what would you be?

I’d be less curious, less happy, less fulfilled. But as another occupation, I don’t even know. Maybe teaching kindergarten, where it’s socially acceptable for me to finger paint and play with clay and sit cross legged in socks on the floor with a bunch of free spirited 5 year olds!

Who’s your dream collaboration?

I’d love to work with the Jim Henson creature shop. Design some bad-ass puppets. Lots of monster puppets, of course.

How is the environment in Toronto? How would you compare the art world in Canada to that of America?

Toronto has an amazing creative environment. It’s a large, metropolitan city with a huge influx of interesting/interested people from around the world, but it’s still smaller than, say, New York City. So it can be easier to create networks amongst artists and to work on building community. I’d say there are probably more similarities than differences when it comes to the art world in Canada and the States. The U.S. has a greater history and a bigger market when it comes to art, but Canada’s scene is always growing and is constantly being informed by current culture and politics, and movements in art from here and around the world.

Who are five up-and-coming artists that we need to look out for?

All of these guys are Toronto artists from different disciplines.
